ECO CONGREGATION GREENING: Christmas is an invitation to all to consider our Planet Earth and help reduce the environmental impact of the holiday season. According to a report by MyWaste.ie the annual Christmas splurge sees us produce 25% – 30% more waste than we normally do, which in turn costs all financially and harms the environment. Eco Congregation invites all to consider the burden of our Christmas activities. With just a little effort an imagination we can save financially and reduce the impact on our precious earth. It is important to be conscious of the planet in our Christmas preparation and choosing of gifts. Buying locally produced products wherever possible, supports small businesses, reduces transportation costs thus having a positive environmental impact. We can lessen the impact on our planet by choosing goods that are manufactured from recycled sources. It also helps to avoid where possible, buying gifts that require batteries. A survey found that 57% of people receive at least one unwanted gift, so ask people what they want for Christmas – or give them a few options to choose from. Focus on buying less and buying better. • Over 60s Climate Work Out Programme

The over 60s taking action! During the highly successful One Westport Circular Economy event last June, we had many interesting talks on different aspects of sustainability and the circular economy.  One of the speakers, Jacinta Barrins presented us with a programme which she runs, voluntarily to raise awareness of our carbon footprint and how we might reduce it.  This programme is aimed at OVER 60s, as Jacinta says that we were not taught the science of climate change in schools or colleges, and many have become alienated or indifferent to it. Jacinta Barrins has retired from her career at the UN, where her work focused on the environment and climate.  She now lives in Galway. Her programme aims to have conversations about climate change in a friendly atmosphere, over a cup of tea as if visiting our neighbours! In fact, she often starts by showing in simple terms the connection between the cuppa and climate change.  Jacinta believes this is the best way to unravel and demystify the terms used in climate science and for building confidence for action. Westport Eco-Congregation  is delighted to have Jacinta Barrins with us in Westport for a six-session programme.  We will start on Tuesday, January 14th 2025 at 10.45 am and for the following four Tuesdays at the same time.  Our final session will be some weeks later on Tuesday, April 8th 2025.  Each session runs for two hours. The first three steps of the course focus on understanding climate change, how it occurs, the challenges of changing behaviour and how to measure a carbon footprint.  The second three steps focus on supporting participants in implementing ONE action based on their carbon footprint results.  At step four, the participants identify ONE action they would like to work on.  The gap between the fifth and sixth sessions allows participants to work with their action! The course will be held at Carrowbeg House in Westport and we welcome any over 60s who want to become more climate and carbon aware.  This  course is free  to all participants, thanks to the generosity of Jacinta Barrins.  Booking is essential as numbers are limited.  To book your place, please ring Brid McAuley at 086 8576425 or Mary Manning at 087 2421330.

  • The blessing of Animals • an Ecumenical Ceremony 🙏👍

This afternoon (05 October 2024), despite the overcast skies and occasional drizzle, a heartfelt ecumenical ceremony took place at Murrisk Car Park in honor of beloved animal companions. Led by Fr. John Kenny and Reverend Suzanne Cousins, the Blessing of Animals ceremony saw local residents gather in prayer and unity to celebrate the bond between humans and animals. Despite the not-so-ideal weather, spirits remained high as attendees brought their pets, ranging from dogs and horses to smaller creatures, for a special blessing. The event highlighted the joy and gratitude people have for the animals that bring love and companionship into their lives. During the ceremony, celebrants gave a poignant reflection on the love for animals expressed by Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. As Christians, we have a responsibility to respond to the key question of immigration across our island, and the world. This fundamental question asks, "Who is my neighbour?", and to answer this we are informed by the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke10:29-37). In the light of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching, our bishops offer this reflection on what hospitality for migrant people means in contemporary Ireland.Mindful that migration has been a central part of our history, the Pastoral Letter provides a space to US as migrant pilgrim people' to contemplate the causes of migration, the gifts that migrants bring to our Church and our country, the economic and social issues we all face in lreland, and the importance of encounter in building a true sense of belonging in every parish and community. May they be filled with joy and perseverance as they share Your message of faith, hope and love.Amen. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Night fever evening is aimed at giving young adults an opportunity to pass on the love of God they have experienced in their own lives to others. They do this by going out in pairs or small groups around the town and inviting others into the church to light a candle. Once there, they gather around the altar and pray before Jesus, present in the Blessed Sacrament. The results can be life changing. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity no matter what age you are please contact Martin on 085-8727732. Thank you
